Reddit user Mr. Squishy recreated the entire Game Boy Pokémon Red Version game in Vanilla Minecraft, i.e., a Minecraft server without gameplay modifications. Instead of using mods, he used 357,000 commands blocks—blocks that execute commands in the popular sandbox game. How long did it take him? Almost two years.
The best thing about this is that it's just like playing Pokémon Red on a Game Boy, only in Minecraft. There's actually a Game Boy built inside the playing arena, and it runs Pokémon Red just like an emulator would. It even has all of the glitches the game originally had. According to Mr. Squishy, Minecraft shouldn't be able to run the game, but the fact that it does really excites him:
This is a recreation of Pokémon Red in Vanilla Minecraft using only command blocks and a resource pack. I have done my best to incorporate all of the original game's features, along with a few iconic bugs (most notably MissingNo/'M and item duplication). I chose not to add any sounds to the game, as I fear there would've been too many desynch issues distracting from the game itself.

YouTuber CaptainSparklez got the version to work on his own Minecraft server and gave it a test run to see how well it worked, which he said was running "flawlessly." You can see some of his gameplay in the GIFs below, and you can check out his YouTube video for the full thing.
If you want to give Pokémon Red a try yourself on your own Vanilla Minecraft server, you don't have to spend the time recreating the game because Mr. Squishy has also given us the download link and some notes for users to follow before playing.
Mr.Squishy has also recreated remade versions for Vanilla Minecraft of Pac-Man, Battleship, Minesweeper, and Blitz Build.
All in all, the man has really given us a great tool to flash right back to the days when we were all gaming away on our Game Boy Colors—with a cool hack to play it in Minecraft!
